About Us

Masa Cooperativa is a majority immigrant-owned cooperative that produces masa, milled from corn grown in partnership with local organic farms. Masa is used to make popular foods, such as tortillas, tamales, and arepas.

We produce masa wholesale for restaurants and retail for the community. Our product is based on ancestral techniques from the indigenous people of the Americas, honoring the cultural value and nutritional importance of corn masa. Our goal is to raise the standard of commercially available masa by providing wholesome organic masa grown and made locally.

History and Importance of Masa

In the Americas, corn has sustained entire civilizations for centuries. Indigenous communities believe that mankind is made of corn. They created the process of nixtamalization, which involves cooking the corn with lime (calcium hydroxide). This ancestral technique of cooking converts corn into a nutritious product by making essential nutrients easier for the body to absorb, such as unlocking calcium and vitamin B3 (niacin).
